Abstract

The flame ionization detector gave responses to oxygen and nitrous oxide by several distinct mechanisms. The responses were obtained by selecting conditions of flow rates of fuel and carrier gases, and adjusting the concentration of impurity hydrocarbon in these gases. Enhanced responses were obtained using a partly premixed flame. Some of the responses were sufficiently linear and reproducible to be used in analyses, and sensitivities were better than those of the thermal conductivity detector. An explanation of the origin of the several response types is attempted.
